This week, state Senator Paula Hicks-Hudson (D-Toledo) introduced Senate Bill 203, which would require state and local fire code officials to accept an inspection or permit issued by another jurisdiction as evidence of a mobile food vendor’s compliance with Ohio Fire Code. "This bill will eliminate barriers and red tape for small business owners," Hicks-Hudson said. “The Ohio Fire Code contains substantive safety requirements that mobile food trucks must follow at all times. This legislation would allow for businesses who meet these requirements by one local authority to take that permit wherever they operate. When county health departments conduct their inspections and issue permits to operate, these same mobile food vendors can take that anywhere in the county. Vendors should not have to jump through additional hoops to operate in a neighboring city when they’ve already passed a fire safety inspection.” Currently, local fire departments (or fire prevention officers) in Ohio have broad authority to conduct inspections for fire safety purposes. While the Ohio Fire Code does not require inspections or permits for food trucks to operate, political subdivisions are allowed to establish local fire codes that may create inspection and permitting programs.  For owners of businesses that currently move between communities and counties, this can mean they may need to be inspected by and receive an operating permit from every city and town in which they wish to conduct business. Not only do these inspections take time during which they could be operating their businesses, but they are also often accompanied by fees that the owner must pay. Senate Bill 203 now awaits hearings in the Senate Government Oversight Committee.

As discussed in our May meeting. You will find the new proposed legislation called the Ohio Childhood Safety Act. I read it as any E occupancies will need to have a third party inspection for any and all egress and fire doors annually. Take a look and I would love to continue the conversation in the comments.

I have been getting requests from Food Truck vendors about rules that are being enforced. See the below code reference in regards to LP gas cylinders. We should be consistent in our enforcement. Please chime in on your thoughts about the "weather protection" part of the code. Rain, sleet, wind, tornadoes, hurricanes? What do we want to see? Also, there have been talks about a regional inspection day. Any thoughts on this as I already have trucks wanting inspection. (e) All LP-Gas container valves, appurtenances, and connections shall be protected to prevent damage from accidental contact with stationary objects, loose objects, stones, mud, or ice thrown, up from the ground or floor, and damage due to overturn or similar vehicular accident. (f) LP-Gas cylinders shall have permanent protection for cylinder valves and connections. (g) Where LP-Gas cylinders are located on the outside of a vehicle, weather protection shall be provided. (h) All materials or devices used to secure LP-Gas containers shall be made of non-combustible material.

Here is a recent article about some of the finding in the LA explosion that happened due to an excess of butane stored in the building. It was found that there was no record of inspection for years. What are your thoughts? Click here for the article

We recently had the honor of having an open house at the Perrysburg Fire Headquarters. We dedicated the station back in January but because of the unfavorable weather conditions we opened it back up to the public for another go round. We dedicated our revamped fire safety trailer with the help of our Eagle scout to be. In addition we showed off our training tower with several rope rescue drills. Our highlight of the afternoon was of course our home sprinkler demo. We started with two 10X10 foot rooms each equipped with a modern couch, tv with stand and curtains. The only difference was one had a sprinkler and one did not. The video starts about 3 minutes and 30 seconds after the initial fire was started on the curtains and spread to the couch. At about the 5 minute mark the fire was fully involved and over 1200 degrees at the ceiling. We were all surprised at how fast the fire progressed. This demo showed the importance of smoke detectors in your home and just how fast the fire spreads. If this fire started in your basement and your smoke detectors were not wired together....How long would it be before the smoke reached the upstairs, you woke up, and was able to get out? The above video shows the fire starting on the curtains and quickly engulfing them. This is the exact way the first fire started in the first video and you can see how fast the fire spreads in as little as three minutes. We join the video about 30 seconds after the start of the fire and in less than 60 seconds the sprinkler is activated and puts out the fire! People asked "What about the water damage?" Home sprinklers have valves you can shut off safely after the fire is out. Restoration companies can clean that up in a matter of hours and may be get you back in your house the same day. To many times fires have progressed to either a total loss or weeks and years out of a home due to fire smoke and water damage. The bigger the fire, the bigger the water needed to put it out. Even worse yet, a loss of life because someone was overcome by smoke or could not get out. Home sprinklers are the best insurance policy. Please help us get the word out.
